KOLKATA: A 14-year-old girl — who was trafficked, tortured and forced in to prostitution and sold to four different brothels in Rajasthan, Delhi, UP and Tripura — has passed Madhyamik with 70% marks.
In 2019, she joined back school in Class IX two-and-a-half months after her rescue in July by cops from five states and members of an NGO. She was abducted on May 23, 2019.
The experience in the school after her return was initially not a pleasant one. She was hounded in school and called a “baje meye (bad girl)” and was forced to drop out of the half-yearly exam. Then NGO Shakti Vahini and the Madhyamgram police stepped in and ensured she was not troubled further at her institution.
On Tuesday, she passed Madhyamik with around 70% marks, one of the highest bagged by a trafficking survivor in the recent memory. But, she faces a few challenges. She does not have a school that can accommodate her with such a percentage given the high cut-offs in her school for science, her favourite stream. But as a fighter, she is not ready to give up.
“I have decided to study Arts. I have got around 70% in both English and Bengali. I want to stand on my feet. I want to be a schoolteacher and stand by my parents,” she told TOI on Thursday. “I had not managed too many good grades in class IX. It took time to come out of the trauma and resume studies. I would have been happier to appear in the exams. My Class-X internal marks are better than that of Class IX,” said the girl.
The Madhyamik could not be held this year due to the pandemic situation and the evaluation was based on the candidate’s performance in the 2019 examination in class IX and internal assessment for every subject in class X on a 50:50 basis.
She is being nominated by Shakti Vahini as one of this year’s voices of the trafficking victims. “This year’s anti-trafficking day theme on July 30 is the voice of the victims. She is a perfect example,” said Rishikant from Shakti Vahini.
According to cops, the girl went missing on the day of the Lok Sabha results. On June 18, her father received a call from her where she asked him to rescue her. “So far, we have nabbed three traffickers,” an investigating officer said.
