The number of people affected by corona is increasing in the Matarbari thermal power project of Maheshkhali in Cox’s Bazar. In the last four days, 104 people have been infected with corona inside this project. At least 75 of them are foreigners. District Civil Surgeon Mahbubur Rahman confirmed in the first light that the construction of a unit of the project has been stopped for the time being to prevent infection.

A four-member medical team led by a civil surgeon visited the thermal power project area on Sunday afternoon to investigate the cause of the outbreak. During this time, the team held meetings with local and foreign officials working on various projects there.

Regarding the situation in the project area, Civil Surgeon Mahbubur Rahman told Prothom Alo on Monday that more than 10,000 local and foreign people are working in 15 units. People who came in contact with the victims were also asked to test the samples separately. The unit has been asked to stop work until the test results are confirmed. The Civil Surgeon said that samples of the victims have been sent to Dhaka for testing. The corona of many of them has been identified. Whether they are infected with corona micron type or not will be known after testing in sample Dhaka.

The civil surgeon said the thermal power project has a corona testing system, isolation center, and necessary doctors. Even then, strict instructions have been issued to ensure that no one working inside the project can go outside and no one from outside can enter. Maheshkhali Upazila Health Officer has been given the responsibility to monitor the matter. Corona’s new hotspot Matarbari project could put the entire Cox’s Bazar at risk if the infection is not controlled.

Meanwhile, in the last 24 hours, 517 samples have been tested in Cox’s Bazar Medical College Lab. Of these, 6 people have been identified as Corona. Of them, 36 are from Maheshkhali. All the victims are working in the Matarbari thermal power project.
On the previous day, on January 8, 35 people were identified as corona in that project, on January 7, 6 people were identified and on January 7, the corona was identified by 23 people.
Construction of the country’s largest Matarbari thermal power project is underway at a cost of around Tk 50,000 crore. Already 83 percent of the work has been completed. The first unit i.e. 600 MW in January 2024 and the second unit in July of the same year, the target has been set to generate another 600 MW of electricity commercially. Matarbari deep seaport is expected to be officially launched in 2025.
