Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday said her government is doing its best to control the prices of daily essentials in the country amid the high global inflation rate.

“We have been trying our best to keep the prices of essentials under control,” she said while inaugurating 40 new fire stations in different places of the county.

The prime minister also directed the authorities concerned to take proper actions against the hoarders of essential items and those who play with their prices.

She joined the inaugural function at the Fire Service and Civil Defence Headquarters in Dhaka’s Fulbaria through a videoconference from her official residence Ganabhaban.

Hasina said the Covid-19 pandemic has caused economic recession throughout the world, deepened by the ongoing Ukraine-Russia war.

There is a food crisis even in many developed countries and the inflation rate went up to 17% in some places. The inflation rate is 7-9% in many European countries, she added.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has congratulated Shehbaz Sharif on his election as the new prime minister of Pakistan.

In a message of felicitations, Bangladesh’s prime minister stressed that the entire region must work together to overcome the challenges for common benefits, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Pakistan’s parliament on Monday elected opposition lawmaker Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif as the new prime minister, following a week of political turmoil that led to the ouster of Imran Khan, according to AP.

Sharif, the brother of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, won with 174 votes after more than 100 lawmakers from Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, or Pakistan Justice Party, resigned and walked out of the National Assembly in protest.

Work to construct homes for the underprivileged people under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Ashrayan project in Panchagarh had to be halted on Tuesday, following a late intervention by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).

The BGB members stopped the construction of the homes for the landless claiming ownership over the land in Tetulia Upazila, that was inaugurated on Tuesday.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Shohag Chandra Saha said the construction alongside rehabilitation activities for 450 landless people of the upazila started in the 2021-22 fiscal year, under the special initiative of Sheikh Hasina’s Ashrayan Project-2.
