Police have arrested Ashish Mishra, son of Indian Home Minister Ajay Mishra, a junior minister in the Narendra Modi government. He was arrested several days after he was charged with killing nine people.
A report by Qatar-based Al-Jazeera quoted police official Upendra Agarwal as saying that Ashish Mishra had been detained on Saturday.
The minister is accused of killing a total of nine people, including four farmers and a journalist, by driving over them.
Violence erupted in Lakhimpur Kheri district last Sunday during protests against the controversial agriculture law. Farmers’ organizations have alleged that a car belonging to Ashish Mishra, son of junior home minister Ajay Mishra, ran over the protesters.
