Police have arrested Mehedi Hasan Babu alias Gundia, 25, the second accused in a case of gang-rape of a housewife in Cox’s Bazar.
Additional Superintendent of Cox’s Bazar Tourist Police Mohiuddin Ahmed confirmed that he was arrested from Rohular Dale Ghonapara hill area of Cox’s Bazar town around 9pm on Monday (January 3). Mehedi Hasan Babu is the son of Abul Kashem of Baharchhara area of Cox’s Bazar city.

He said that with the arrest of Mehedi Hasan Babu, the second accused in the case, it has been possible to arrest all the accused in the rape case. Seven people have been arrested in connection with the gang rape case.

On the night of December 22, a woman was gang-raped behind the Zia Guest Inn and Beach Post Office in Cox’s Bazar after taking her husband and children hostage. In that incident, the woman’s husband mentioned the names of 4 people and filed a case against three of them as unknown accused. Police and RAB arrested 7 people till yesterday in this incident. Apart from Ashik, the police have remanded 5 others arrested in the incident for different periods. The investigating officer applied for a 7-day remand on Monday by showing Ashik, who is in jail, on Sunday. The hearing is scheduled for Tuesday.

Meanwhile, a writ petition has been filed in the High Court seeking a judicial inquiry into the incident. Supreme Court lawyer Abdullah Al Harun Bhuiyan filed the writ petition on Monday (January 3) morning. In the writ petition, seven persons including Home Secretary, Inspector General of Police, Secretary of Civil Aviation and Tourism and Tourist Police have been named as defendants.

The petition seeks a ruling on why the Cox’s Bazar District Judge or Chief Judicial Magistrate should not be directed to conduct a judicial inquiry into the incident and take appropriate legal action against the miscreants.
