Former Bollywood actress Somy Ali recently raised her voice over the issue of domestic abuse against the LGBTQ community amid the COVID-19 pandemic. In a conversation with a news portal, the actress who has been working relentlessly to help victims of human trafficking and domestic violence within the LGBTQ community, said, ‘The abuse was always there, but the pandemic just made it worse for the people from the LGBTQ community. We received absolutely an unprecedented call volume for my organisation from people within the LGBTQ community about domestic abuse during the pandemic. Mainly because everyone was in lockdown’. Further, while revealing the reason behind the increase in such incidents amid the pandemic, Somy said, ‘They were losing jobs, having trouble paying their bills and all these issues were causing one partner to become violent, while the other becomes the victim. I would not deem the pandemic to be the sole cause of one physically abusing their partner. But I think it definitely added fuel to the fire considering you are with the individual 24/7 and perhaps drinking or even engaging in drug usage.’ Well, Somy Ali is not the only one who is raising her voice in support of LGBTQ and transgender rights. Recently, ‘Bigg Boss 14’ winner Rubina Dilaik also announced that she will be auctioning a gown very dear to her for the good of the community. It’s the gown she wore at the finale of ‘Bigg Boss 14’ which she will auction to raise the fund for the LGBTQIA+ community during pride month. In one of her interviews with a news portal, she said, ‘Until we get to a point where we don’t need a special month to commemorate the LGBTQIA+ community, our efforts will not stop’. Meanwhile, coming back to the actress, Somy Ali who earlier made headlines for revealing her horrific ordeal from childhood days, has featured in many films like ‘Aao Pyaar Karen’, ‘Teesra Kaun’, ‘Krishan Avtaar’, among others.
