Taiwan’s President Xi Jinping has said his government will not bow to Chinese pressure. He also said that Taiwan will continue to improve its defense sector. Khabar Al-Jazeera.

Al Jazeera’s report quoted Tsai Ying-wen as saying that China’s attitude does not protect independence, democracy or sovereignty. He made the remarks at a National Day rally on Sunday in protest of China’s continued threats.

The strong counter-statement came on Sunday, a day after Chinese President Xi Jinping promised Taiwan a “peaceful reunion” with China.

Under Xi Jinping, Beijing has stepped up military and political pressure on Taiwan to accept its rule.

“I hoped the tensions in Taiwan would ease,” said Tsai Ying-wen. But if China continues to go too far, we too will be forced to retaliate.
