Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said, “Bangladesh Army is becoming more modern day by day. The army is being modernized with the addition of new infantry divisions, para commando brigades, and air defense systems. Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman established the Bangladesh Military Academy in Comilla Cantonment in 1974 with the dream of building a modern army.

He was speaking as the chief guest in a video teleconference on the occasion of the commissioning of 103 cadets in the 61st long-term course of Bangladesh Military Academy at Bhatiari in Chittagong yesterday.

Welcoming the new cadets, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said, “By taking this oath today, you have been entrusted with the sacred duty of defending the great independence and sovereignty of the motherland.” We have to be alert and always ready to fulfill this responsibility. Protecting the independence and sovereignty of the country will be the main vow of your professional life, even at the cost of supreme sacrifice.

Calling on the young army officers to uphold the spirit of the Liberation War, the Prime Minister said, “As the foreign policy of the Father of the Nation, we believe in the principle of ‘Peace, and friendship with all, not enmity with anyone’.” However, we have already acquired the ability to defend our independence and sovereignty if ever attacked by the enemy from outside. At the same time, our army has earned the admiration of all quarters by showing efficiency and professionalism in carrying out its duties at home and abroad. This reputation must be maintained.

Mentioning that the government is working to build the Bangladesh Army as a modern force of international standard, the Prime Minister said 3 new infantry divisions and first para commando brigade have already been formed in the army. Combined are state-of-the-art armored vehicles and medium and long-range MLRS regiments with artillery core. A groundbreaking change in air defense has been signaled by the establishment of automatic anti-aircraft Sorad, Visorad and state-of-the-art Oricon missile regiments. In addition to state-of-the-art engineering and signaling equipment, various weapons, helicopters, aircraft, modern infantry gazettes and various other weapons and equipment have been attached to the Bangladesh Army.

On the occasion, Chief of Army Staff General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed presented awards to the meritorious cadets on behalf of the Prime Minister. Battalion Senior Under Officer Abdullah Al Islam won the Sword of Honor and Company Junior Under Officer Imrul Kayes won the Army Chief Gold Medal for excellence in military matters.
Through this parade of 61st long-term course, 95 Bangladeshis, 6 Palestinians, 103 cadets including one Sri Lankan cadet got a commission. There are 6 male and 6 female cadets out of 95 Bangladeshi cadets.
