Shilpa Shetty’s businessman husband Raj Kundra’s name is all over the news these days. He was arrested on July 19 for allegedly making pornographic films and publishing them through mobile apps. Over the past few days, along with actress Poonam Pandey, a Youtuber and an aspiring actress have spoken up, claiming that Kundra and his associates tried to lure them to do the films for their app. Mumbai Police said while Raj started his business around 18 months ago, he had begun earning approximately Rs 6-8 lakhs daily. His business flourished even more since the COVID-19 induced lockdowns last year. Reports suggest that his annual income stands somewhere around Rs 120 crore and his net worth is estimated to be around $550 million, which comes up to around Rs 4000 crore. As we hear of all the money he has amassed over the years, we can’t help but recall the time he had opened up about his ‘humble background’, stating that he ‘hated poverty’. In an interview with Filmfare in 2013, Raj Kundra had said, ‘I come from a humble background. My dad moved to London 45 years ago and worked as a bus conductor whereas my mother worked in a factory. We never had it easy. I’m a self-made man since I left college at the age of 18. Whenever Shilpa checks me for spending carelessly, I tell her I have no qualms about enjoying the money I have made. My anger pushed me. I hated poverty so much that I wanted to become rich. And I did make a difference to my life. Shilpa respected me for that as she’s self-made too.’ He had also said, ‘What irks me most about Shilpa is that she can get extremely hyper. I ask her to calm down. She’s become a lot more placid than before. Any major news and her whole world crumbles in front of her. I’m the calming factor in her life. Recently Rajasthan Royals got a penalty worth ₹100 crores. Puzzled she asked, ‘You’re smiling?’ I told her that nothing would change by being upset. Let’s go with the flow.’ Coming back to the present day, Raj has been sent to judicial custody till July 23. The latest revelation in the case is that as much as Rs 25 lakh was paid as bribes to the Mumbai Crime Branch officials by Raj Kundra to avoid getting arrested for allegedly creating pornographic films.
