BYD Unveils Flagship 600 km Electric Truck With 1.5 MW Charging
Chinese vehicle manufacturer BYD has officially introduced its most aggressive expansion into European heavy commercial logistics to date. Unveiled at the IAA Transportation 2026 trade event in Hannover, the company debuted the ETT 44, a flagship battery-electric heavy-duty tractor designed explicitly to transform long-haul freight operations and long-distance transport networks across the European continent.
The debut represents a decisive strategic move to bring ultra-fast charging technology, previously refined in consumer passenger vehicles, directly into the commercial transport sector. Industry filings indicate that BYD is seeking to challenge established European truck manufacturers by promising drastically reduced depot downtime and improved operational efficiency for large-scale freight logistics providers.
Power Architecture and Heavy Duty Capability
Built as a heavy-duty 4×2 tractor capable of supporting total combined vehicle weights up to 44 tonnes, the ETT 44 is engineered on an advanced 851-volt high-voltage electrical architecture. Positioned beneath the cab is a massive 651 kilowatt-hour Blade Battery pack, driving a heavy-duty powertrain rated at a continuous 743 horsepower with peak capability reaching 1,000 horsepower.
This high-capacity battery configuration enables the tractor to achieve an estimated maximum driving range of up to 600 kilometers on a single charge. Demonstrating strong structural reliability and battery longevity, BYD backs the platform with an extensive ten-year or 1.2-million-kilometer battery warranty, setting an exceptionally high durability standard for commercial fleet operations.
Rapid Megawatt Charging Alters Fleet Logistics
Where the ETT 44 fundamentally shifts commercial transportation expectations is in its high-speed energy replenishment capabilities. Standard Combined Charging System (CCS2) DC connections handle up to 420 kilowatts, charging the battery from 20 percent to 80 percent in roughly one hour. However, plugging into BYD’s Megawatt Charging System elevates maximum charging power above 1.5 megawatts.
When connected to a compatible megawatt power source, the heavy tractor replenishes its battery from 20 percent to 80 percent in approximately 20 minutes, adding roughly 248 miles of operational driving range. Company leadership emphasized that minimizing depot charging times directly unlocks higher fleet profitability, ensuring commercial trucks spend maximum operational time moving freight on highways.
Beyond the flagship ETT 44 tractor unit, BYD showcased a comprehensive commercial vehicle portfolio tailored for varied municipal and regional delivery requirements. The expanded line features rigid 4×2 and 6×2 truck chassis configured for 26-tonne swap body and hooklift duties, alongside the updated E-Vali light commercial electric van and the EYT 2.0 specialized electric yard tractor.
Integrated Solutions and Mobility Management
Driver safety and ergonomics remain central elements of the new commercial vehicle platform. The ETT 44 arrives fully equipped with a suite of active safety technologies and driver-assistance software. Standard features include adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking systems, lane-keeping assistance, and comprehensive blind-spot monitoring systems designed to protect surrounding road users in complex urban corridors.
Rather than delivering vehicles as standalone hardware products, BYD is promoting a holistic Total Cost of Mobility commercial model. This operational framework bundles heavy electric trucks directly with stationary energy storage systems, software-driven energy management platforms, custom megawatt charging infrastructure, and specialized corporate financing solutions to simplify electric fleet adoption for commercial freight operators.
Regulatory disclosures show that BYD’s commercial vehicle division now operates across more than 100 countries and upwards of 400 major cities globally. By supplying an integrated ecosystem where battery cell manufacturing, vehicle assembly, and high-power charging hardware are produced in-house, BYD effectively eliminates common supply chain and infrastructure compatibility issues facing fleet managers.
European Heavy Freight Market Dynamics
Europe has emerged as the global focal point for electric heavy truck commercialization. Incumbent original equipment manufacturers including Daimler Truck with its eActros 600, Volvo Trucks with the FH Electric platform, Scania, and MAN are aggressively deploying electric freight options. Industry analysts note that megawatt charging technology has become the mandatory standard required to replace long-haul diesel fleets.
The ETT 44 matches or exceeds the core performance metrics of established European legacy models, particularly regarding peak charge rates and turnkey energy deployment. While traditional truck manufacturers remain largely dependent on third-party charging networks and slow-moving infrastructure consortiums, BYD's established experience in high-capacity charger manufacturing offers a distinct competitive advantage for commercial operators.
This strategic alignment also positions BYD favorably against North American electric vehicle manufacturers preparing European fleet expansions, including Tesla with its Semi tractor. While competing brands must work to establish localized high-power charging networks, BYD’s extensive global track record in ultra-fast charging hardware deployment provides an immediate operational foundation across major European transport corridors.
