EVgo has officially launched its newest high-power fast-charging facility on South Robertson Boulevard. The flagship installation represents the largest non-Tesla public charging site in the City of Los Angeles, offering enhanced charging capacity for thousands of local commuters and long-distance travelers passing through the metropolitan core.
The expansive location features 10 individual charging stalls equipped with 20 distinct charging connectors. Capable of delivering up to 350 kilowatts of ultra-fast power to compatible vehicles, the station delivers a major boost to regional charging availability. The hub addresses growing municipal demands as California continues its aggressive transition toward zero-emission transportation across all consumer vehicle segments.
While high-speed infrastructure usually focuses exclusively on next-generation architectures, this location incorporates a surprising feature for legacy battery vehicles. Alongside standard high-voltage connections, the facility retains dedicated hardware for older charging protocols. This design decision ensures that early-generation electric cars remain viable for daily urban driving despite the rapid evolution of modern charging standards.
Expansion of Infrastructure in Mid-City Los Angeles
Situated just off the heavily trafficked Santa Monica Freeway in the Mid-City neighborhood, the new station caters to a critical commercial and transit corridor. Drivers operating along this central arterial route now have reliable access to high-power fast chargers, filling a high-density geographical gap between West Los Angeles and Downtown.
The site was strategically selected to maximize convenience during charging stops. Located within short walking distance of numerous retail centers, grocery outlets, and dining establishments, the hub allows vehicle owners to run routine errands or enjoy a meal while their battery replenishes, minimizing the perceived downtime associated with non-Tesla fast charging.
To streamline the user experience, the chargers are fully integrated with modern software systems. According to federal energy databases, the installation supports automated authentication protocols like Plug & Charge. This technology enables seamless billing and session initiation as soon as the cable is connected, provided the driver maintains an active account profile.
A Rare Lifeline for Legacy Electric Vehicles
What truly sets this site apart from typical urban fast-charging installations is the inclusion of dedicated CHAdeMO connectors. While most network operators have largely phased out this legacy Japanese standard in favor of newer configurations, two of the station’s plugs remain specifically wired to deliver up to 100 kilowatts of power using CHAdeMO cables.
This commitment provides crucial utility for drivers of early-generation electric vehicles, most notably the first two iterations of the Nissan Leaf and select Japanese plug-in hybrids like the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. As these older models flood the affordable used car market, maintaining accessible fast-charging options helps preserve their practical utility for budget-conscious urban drivers.
The inclusion of native CHAdeMO ports is particularly valuable due to adapter limitations. Unlike newer charging standards that transition easily through passive hardware, converting CHAdeMO to alternative formats requires costly active adapters that remain official safety risks according to standards organizations. Native station support remains the only reliable fast-charging method for these vehicles.
High-Power Architecture and Power Distribution
Beyond legacy vehicle support, the site's hardware layout reflects a thoughtful approach to power distribution. Rather than installing identical power cabinets across all stalls, the facility utilizes a tiered power arrangement designed to accommodate diverse vehicle battery architectures without wasting electrical grid capacity or reducing individual stall charging efficiency.
The 10 stalls feature two 100-kilowatt units, three 200-kilowatt units, and five flagship 350-kilowatt dispensers. The remaining 18 charging cables are outfitted with Combined Charging System connectors. This varied distribution matches vehicles with appropriate power levels, allowing high-voltage 800-volt architectures to maximize charging speeds while preserving lower-tier stalls for mainstream commuter vehicles.
Although native North American Charging Standard cables are absent at this specific site, drivers of compatible vehicles can easily charge using standard hardware adapters. The setup ensures that modern electric cars equipped with alternate ports can utilize the site’s high-power CCS connectors without encountering communication protocols or physical interface barriers.
The Evolving Landscape of National EV Networks
This major Los Angeles deployment reflects broader ongoing growth across national public charging infrastructure networks. Regulatory disclosures from the Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center indicate that the network operator currently manages 1,175 fast-charging stations across the United States, providing consumer access to more than 5,185 individual fast-charging ports nationwide.
As the EV industry shifts toward unified charging standards, network operators are expanding multi-standard deployments across key metropolitan hubs. In addition to expanding CCS infrastructure, key operators have begun deploying dedicated Tesla Supercharger dispensers, including next-generation hardware offering up to 500 kilowatts at 1,000 volts, while retrofitting existing stations to accommodate changing vehicle hardware across North America.
