The initiative expands electric vehicle infrastructure beyond primary interstate highways into key state routes and regional corridors. The state reached a critical milestone by fulfilling initial National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program requirements, which mandated charging sites every 50 miles along designated alternative fuel corridors. Having satisfied those baseline metrics, transport officials now possess the regulatory flexibility to allocate federal resources toward secondary routes. The new grants focus on key transportation arteries, including US Highways 10, 12, 18, 45, 61, and 63.
In addition to major US routes, the latest distribution of funds targets 12 state highways, filling critical gaps in regional travel networks. Communities slated to host these new installations range from northern vacation hubs like Eagle River and Sturgeon Bay to southwestern towns like Viroqua and Prairie du Chien. This distributed model aims to eliminate range anxiety in previously underserved regions.

To maximize convenience, state planners intentionally selected host sites where motorists naturally pause during long journeys. Rather than placing isolated chargers in remote parking structures, the state prioritized host locations equipped with existing amenities. Selected venues include high-traffic gas stations, regional grocery stores, full-service hotels, and dining establishments, enabling drivers to complete routine errands while recharging.
Notable location awards include Kwik Trip convenience stores in Belgium, Coloma, Prairie du Chien, River Falls, Sturgeon Bay, and Whitewater. Additionally, hospitality venues in Boscobel, Dodgeville, Eagle River, Oconomowoc, Richland Center, and Watertown received awards, alongside a Woodman’s market in Madison. Integrating fast chargers into established commercial centers ensures high visibility and immediate utility for daily commuters and travelers.
State transport officials highlighted the economic and practical advantages of embedding charging equipment into local business districts. WisDOT Secretary Kristina Boardman emphasized that the network was designed from the beginning to support local economies while serving motorists. Providing high-speed charging at established retail locations allows drivers to utilize dwell time effectively while boosting customer traffic for surrounding regional merchants.
Hardware Deployments and Technological Standards
Because funding originates from the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, all projects must adhere to strict operational and performance guidelines. Every funded station must feature at least four fast-charging ports, each capable of delivering a continuous output of 150 kilowatts simultaneously. Consequently, this deployment round guarantees the addition of at least 168 high-power charging ports throughout Wisconsin.
According to regulatory disclosures, site hosts will install hardware manufactured by industry vendors such as Autel, Gilbarco, and Tesla. While state records do not specify the exact breakdown of connector types for every newly awarded location, existing network metrics reveal strong compatibility with North American Charging Standard hardware. Approximately 93 percent of active fast chargers statewide currently support NACS connectors.

Under program rules, federal grants cover up to 80 percent of eligible project expenses, requiring private or local grant recipients to provide a minimum 20 percent matching investment. The release of these funds follows a complex legal background surrounding federal infrastructure grants. Federal executive actions attempted to freeze designated charging program funds in early 2025. Wisconsin joined a coalition of states challenging the administrative hold in federal court, ultimately securing a judicial injunction in June 2025 that unfroze the matching funds and allowed state transportation agencies to resume distribution.

However, long-term infrastructure funding faces potential headwinds as current statutory authorizations approach expiration. The federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is set to expire at the end of September, and legislative leaders have not yet passed a long-term reauthorization package. Governor Evers recently urged congressional delegates to pass sustained funding legislation covering roads, bridges, transit, and clean fuel infrastructure.
